After meeting at an event at the Governor Thomas Bennett House last spring and wanting to feature them on my blog, the lovely ladies from Duvall Catering and Event Design invited me to capture a crab crack at Boone Hall Plantation’s Cotton Dock. It was a perfect spring evening with the marsh breeze blowing just the right amount to keep the mosquitos away. This event was for Absolutely Charleston and highlighted local dishes like Huguenot Torte and Frogmore Stew, and also taught guests about the local tradition of crabbing. It was the perfect event to highlight Duvall’s versatility in the types of events they cater and plan.
Looking for a caterer or event planner (or both) for your wedding or event? Isabelle Donovan and Emma Lesesne-Booth took some time to sit down and answer a few questions about all you wanted to know about Duvall!
The events I have had the pleasure of experiencing with Duvall seem to exude the aesthetic of the Lowcountry. Does Duvall specialize in providing an authentic Charleston experience?
To some extent, yes. We have been working in the Charleston market for more than 35 years now and have a pretty good grasp on what makes a good Lowcountry party! We’re also enjoying growing to working with more modern and corporate clients and bringing something new to the event scene as well!
What types of events does Duvall specialize in?
If you can dream it, we can do it. We do a lot of weddings but handle many corporate events and social events as well! Anything from a wedding to a business luncheon to a baby shower – we do it all!
Your company seems so much more than a catering company. How do you think Duvall stands out from the rest?
We stand out in the fact that we are “full service” – we will handle everything from catering, rentals, linens, bar service, event staffing, floral and design and décor. It keeps the planning process simple and provides a really seamless event. We work with clients who have pre-booked full service planners and clients who prefer to piece the event together with our help independent of a planner – whatever your needs are, we’ll personalize our services for you!
What kind of team do you assemble to put on an event like this one at Boone Hall and the one for the Family Circle Cup?
We bring in chefs, service staff, bartenders, event designers and outside vendors like rental companies to pull off something like this!
What can Duvall provide for couples having a wedding reception?
Our most common services are catering, bar & beverage, rentals & staffing. On top of that we can provide custom décor & design as well!
What types of events do you have the most fun planning?
It totally depends planner to planner – some love weddings, some love large scale corporate events like the Family Circle Cup and some like more intimate social dinners for a birthday party!
What has been a favorite event?
One of our favorite events as a team was our 35th anniversary party – we split it into multiple distinct parties in one 30,000 sq foot warehouse! We had a bridal event, a social event, a corporate event under one roof with lots of fun décor, design, entertainment and food to match!
My husband is a little bit of a Lee Bros. super fan. Tell me about Duvall’s relationship with the Lee Bros.
We are too! Their food is amazing! It began two years ago at a fundraising event for GrowFood Carolina – the event went off so well that they asked if we would be willing to partner with them again on large-scale catering and a match made in heaven was born! We basically work with them to brand the event and write a menu and then manage their appearance and all of the logistics with regard to the event. It’s an awesome experience for a corporate group!
Here are some pictures from the Lee Bros event for the Family Circle Cup:
What trends are you seeing in Charleston weddings and events?
The wedding cake tradition is fading out while small cakes to cut and dessert stations are popping up. People are getting less traditional in things like bouquet tosses and garter tosses and champagne toasts and doing more fun and spunky personalized things that speak more clearly to the couple itself.
Do you do events of all sizes?
From 2-5,000 – we will do it all!
What is your favorite Charleston wedding venue?
It’s so hard to pick a favorite. We are so lucky to work in so many beautiful historic venues around town – anything with a great view of some beautiful oaks or the water is a favorite of ours!
Walk us through the process of planning a wedding. Should a couple hire a planner first?
It starts with an initial phone call and moves on to an estimate or proposal. It next goes to a contract form. We chat about menu, bar, staff, rentals, design and any other special details and make sure we capture your overall vision and cover all the logistics from A-Z. A planner is totally an individual preference – if it’s a heavily detail oriented wedding and you don’t have time to devote a lot of time to the planning – we definitely recommend taking the stress off with one of the many awesome planners in town!
